Prostitution

Unfortunately, many women turn to prostitution to pay for their heroin. Some work in saunas, massage parlors, from their homes or as call girls, but the majority will end up on the streets. Prostitution is illegal worldwide, with only a few exceptions, so these women are at risk of being arrested and ending up with a criminal record. There is also the risk of STDs, HIV/AIDS, rape, battery and even murder. If you do have to work as a prostitute to finance your drug habit, please take note of the following:

Common Sense Rules

• Look inside the vehicle for weapons, ropes, empty alcohol bottles/cans (people's moods can change quickly when drinking and a situation can become dangerous), no keys in the ignition (it may be a stolen car). Check to make sure that there is no-one else hidden in the vehicle, especially if its a van (ask to see inside the back).

• Always take your punter (customer/trick/date) to a place that you are familiar with so that if anything happens you know where you are and your way about. Never go out into the countryside or anywhere that is too deserted.

• Don't go to a punters house, as you cannot guarantee your safety and you could end up being held against your will, raped or even murdered. The house may be set back from the road with no close neighbors or they may be on holiday, and he could keep you there with no worry about anyone hearing you. Also, you don't know if the house is going to be empty, he may have friends waiting and you might end up being gang raped.

• Always discuss what services you provide and your prices before you commence business and if possible, before you drive off. You don't want to drive for 10 minutes only to discover that he wanted anal and you don't do it, as you will end up wasting your time and not getting paid for it.

• Never let the punter park with the doors blocked by a wall, hedge, etc. Always make sure that you can open your door and don't let him lock it. If the car has central locking, open your door slightly so that the central locking doesn't work on it. Otherwise he can press the switch on his side and lock you in.

• Make sure that he pays you before you start. You don't want to end up asking for the money afterwards only to find out that he don't have enough, or worse still, he doesn't have any! If possible, try to make sure he has money before you even get in the car and drive off (although this is not always possible, as some punters would be too suspicious and would rather just not bother. Sometimes you just have to have a little bit of faith!) Always check the money even if he is a regular. Try to find out how to distinguish between fake and real money.

• Try to charge the same amount. Find out what other girls charge, as punters will have to pay that amount if everyone charges the same. Don't undercut other girls, as you could end up getting beaten up if they find out and you are only doing yourself out of money.

• If you decide that you want to take your customers home, as its safer than working from the car, try to figure them out first. The best way is to go somewhere in the car the first time you meet them. If everything goes well you can let them know that if they decide to see you again, they can visit you at home (this might encourage them to come again, as most punters prefer to go indoors as they are worried about being arrested). Don't give them the address then, wait until they pick you up again and then take them to the house. This way the only punters that know where you live are the ones that are decent and that you know are genuine. Otherwise you end up with every dick-head knowing your address, a lot of which have no respect and will turn up all hours of the day and have no discretion.

• Always practice safe sex and always use your own condoms - sometimes punters offer to use their own but beware of this, as they have been known to prick holes in them so that they split once you start having sex (you can get free condoms from Family Planning clinics and organisations that work with prostitutes). Always put the condom on yourself, as punters have been known to damage them with their fingernails when putting them on.

• When you are going to have sex, always guide his penis in with your hand around it, so that you can double-check that the condom is still in place. That way you know that they haven't taken it off when you weren't looking (esp. with doggy-style), as well as knowing that its still in one piece.

• This ones pretty obvious, but just incase - never let a punter tie you up or blindfold you.

• When having sex, try to always take the top position. This way you are in control and can stop when you want to. Try not to let the punter go on top, as if things turn nasty you don't want to be pinned underneath him, as you won't be able to get away. Be careful if you decide to let them go behind (doggy style), as they will often try to do anal without your consent and say that it was an 'accident', also they can pull the condom off quite easily by 'accidentally' slipping out and ripping it off quickly. In this position you don't know what they are doing and it gives the men a feeling of dominance. It is also easy for them to push forward with their weight and pin you underneath them, flat on your stomach.

• Let someone know where you are going and how long you think you are going to be. That way they can get help if anything goes wrong. If you have a mobile phone and you don't work with a friend you can always pretend to phone someone when you get in the car, giving a description of the car, man and the license plate number. If you are no good at pretending to speak to someone, you could say its an answering machine and leave a message saying 'Hi its (your name), its (time of day). I'm in a (type of car), registration number **. I'll ring you when I get back'. This makes the punter think that someone knows who you are with and that someone will be wondering where you are if they don't hear from you. Once off the phone, mention that for your safety you always phone to say who you are with and that if you don't call back in an hour, they will phone the police. Just casually mention it, as if he hasn't realised why you had just called someone.

• Other than that, you can use text messages. Pretend to send a text message with a quick car description and registration. Tell the punter that someone will be worried if you don't get in touch in a certain length of time. Another thing you could do is, when you get in the car mention how in one of the houses (one with the best view of the road) lives a really old and nosey lady or say a worried friend, who writes down details of what cars you get into. The main point of this exercise (and no. 12) is that you make the punter think that people know that you are in his car. Then, if he was thinking of doing something to you, he will probably think twice. Because even if he doesn't really believe you, I doubt he will want to take the chance and end up getting caught. Fair enough he will probably come back for a different girl, but the point of this is to look after yourself, and let other people look out for themselves.

• Business and pleasure DON'T mix. Don't accept any gear, drinks or food off a punter. He may have slipped something into it.

• Don't rip punters off. It pisses the other girls off and you could end up beaten up or murdered. It might not even be for much money but some people would kill you for doing something like that to them.

• If you do have a problem with a particular punter, let the other girls know. Most cities have organisations for working women which offer advice and give free condoms and other 'tools of the trade'!  Most of these organisations can help you with legal matters, housing, debts, health, etc. You can also anonymously report any incidents with punters to the police through them or you can let them know so that they can warn other girls. A lot of places print out sheets of details of bad punters for the other women to read. They give descriptions of the men, what car they drive, what they asked for, where they were and what they did (attacked, ripped off, raped, etc.)

• Report any crimes to them without giving your name and they will pass the information on to all other girls and to the police, if you want them to.

• Use a latex/polyurethane condom for each sexual act, to prevent STDs and HIV. For oral sex try a non-lubricated or flavored condom.  Vaginal/anal sex, use a lubricated condom, and as much lube as possible, to reduce "trauma and abrasions", which means harm to your vagina. Its especially important to protect yourself from secondary/re-infection with HIV if you are immune compromised from HIV or Hepatitis C. Obviously, condoms also prevent pregnancy!

• Dress appropriately.  i.e. Wear shoes that you can run in; Don't wear necklaces, scarves, key chains etc. as anything around neck is dangerous (it can be used to strangle or drag you)

STD Testing

You can get a full check from most hospitals and from some Family Planning centers. I am not sure how it works in the States but in the UK if you have an AIDS test it is registered and when you apply for insurance etc. it has to be declared. If you give a false name & address you can keep your medical record clean. It also means that you can be more truthful and let them know that you are working as a prostitute, without having to worry about it appearing on your medical records. By admitting this you ensure that they will carry out every test available and they will also offer you the choice to have an immunisation for Hepatitis C. If they don't offer you the injection and you would like it, ask for it. In the UK this injection is given free to people that are considered at risk of catching Hepatitis C and this includes prostitutes.

You should always be practicing safe sex but this doesn't mean that you don't need to get tested. It is best to get tested on a regular basis to ensure that you remain healthy. You never know if something has leaked out or someone's been sloppy. Its nice to have peace of mind and to know that everything is clean and well.

Faking It

This can be quite dangerous as if a punter realises what you are up to, they will be pretty mad. Whilst some people will just shout and complain, others may get violent. They may also chuck you out of the car and drive off, leaving you far from the beat/stroll. Another problem with this is that you have to let them go on top or do it from behind (doggy style).

But, it is a good way of getting your money without having your body invaded, especially if you are turkeying and don't feel well. Most of the time they can't tell but its a good idea to try to practice and don't do it to everyone, use your judgment. If you have a partner at home, have a practice with him to see if you can do it right or try to practice with a regular punter or someone you know is okay, so that if they do realise you aren't in danger.

The best way to do this is to put on lots of lube between your thighs and keep them very tightly together. Their penis is then be placed between your thighs and trapped inside. You can also do it by putting it between your legs and holding your hand, palm up. Their penis is trapped between the outside of your vagina and your palm (they will be rubbing against you but if you practice safe sex this won't be a problem). They will think that they are inside and if they do realise, you can say 'oops its just slipped out' and you will have to put it in for real. However, its best used if you've got someone who is very eager, drunk or in a hurry. Make sure you still use a condom, even though you are not planning on having actual intercourse, as their penis will be rubbing against your vagina and therefore needs to be covered!

For blowjobs you can use your hand (full hand wrapped round, like a fist) and hold your mouth open at the top. If you put a lot of lube in your hand and hold it quite tight, you can get them going in no time. Or just give them a wank (hand job) and flick your tongue at the top of their penis (less effort needed). Make sure that you always practice safe sex. STDs including HIV and Herpes can be caught from giving oral sex, so be safe.

Tips

• Don't take a weapon. Its tempting to take something like a knife so that you have a weapon if your attacked but its not worth it. Its too easy for them to take off you and use against you. Also you have to think of it in the way that if you used it to stab them, unless you killed them, they would still be able-bodied enough to attack you and take the weapon off you. Then whatever they originally had planned would end up twice as bad for you.

• Work with a friend so that you can look out for each other or if that's not possible, pretend to call someone with details of the punter and his car, or say that a friend that lives opposite looks out for you. Give the impression that someone knows that you are in their car and that person will be concerned if you don't return shortly. If necessary, as you pull away even wave at a stranger walking past. Hopefully he wont risk doing anything wrong, just incase that was your mate and they took down his registration.

• When you go to sort out the money and they say that they don't have any change, don't say if you do. Hopefully they will give you the extra five or ten. Or take the note off them and say that you'll stop off on the way back for change. Hopefully they will forget and you will get away with a 'tip'.

• Use your hand more when doing oral, it takes all the work out of it.

• Always use your own condoms. Always put the condom on yourself. Always guide him in yourself.

• If you have transport, try to drive about and scout out places to go with your punters. This way it saves time on the day, as you don't want to be driving around all afternoon looking for somewhere safe. Remember that a place that looks good at night wont look as good during the day.

• Try to always charge the same amount. Other girls can turn violent if they find out that you are undercutting them. Also, if everyone charges the same then they have to pay that price, so don't do yourself out of money.

• Before you start make sure that you let them know exactly what they can and more importantly, cannot do. This way there will be no misunderstandings.

• Don't rip people off, you will end up paying in the end. Either by someone taking revenge or purely by the fact that word will get round and no-one will want to pick you up anymore.

• As much as possible try to stick to the same corner or patch of road and try to keep the same jacket. As punters often think its suspicious if you change your jacket, hairstyle, corner etc. regularly. It makes them think that you might be ripping people off and changing these things in the hope that people wont recognize you as well. And that said, you want your regular punters to be able to recognize you quickly.

• Little things like remembering the punters name and things about him, or giving a quick massage before you start, can make them come back for more. Especially with street girls, they don't expect things like massages so it makes you stand out from the rest, in a good way.

• If you get a bad feeling about someone, don't try to ignore it. Listen to your gut instinct and don't go with them. Your initial feelings are normally right. Sometimes you might misjudge people but do you really want to find out. Its not worth risking it, especially as there will always be another punter round the corner.

• Always report any bad punters. Find out what organisation works with prostitutes in your area. They can offer advice, information, assistance and free condoms. Most run an 'Ugly Mugs' system, whereby they give out information of bad punters. Girls fill out a report sheet giving details of what happened to them (attacked, raped, ripped off, degraded, etc.), a description of the punter, his car, where they met him, what he wanted, and any other details they think are relevant. These are then printed out for girls to take copies, so that everyone is informed of who to look out for. If your local organisation doesn't run a scheme like this, why not talk to them about implementing one. Its easy enough for them to do and they can give the information out on leaflets or put up the details on a notice board in their office. Most organisations also offer help with contacting the police. They will either take down the details on your behalf and pass them onto the police anonymously, or they will accompany you to the police station to report it, to ensure that you are treated well. As there have been reports previously of girls being badly looked or not believed, because of them being prostitutes.

• Even if its only something like they frightened you, perhaps they were swearing at you and talking quite violently, etc. Still report it to the organisation in your area that deals with working women. That way they can keep a note of your report and if in the future that punter turns violent, they have more details about him to go on. Often men that rape and murder start off just fantasying about these things and gradually build up, and they might only be saying these things to you but they could end up doing them to someone else.

• Unless you have a tattoo with your name on it, try to use a false name. This way it would be hard for a punter to find out a lot about you. Also if you are in public with someone who doesn't know your working and a man comes up shouting 'Hello Amy' you can always say 'I think you have me mistaken with someone else', or just look around like who's he talking to? The punter should get the message that you don't want to talk and your friend wont be any the wiser.

• Even if your desperate for money, turkeying really bad, feeling like shit - DON'T be tempted to have sex or do oral or anal without a condom. Always use one, no matter what. A punter might make you a great offer of hundreds of pounds/dollars. DON'T DO IT. Remember that no matter how clean or nice he looks, he could still have AIDS or another STD. In the end, is your life really worth that? Sure it might be nice to be given $/£1,000 but after all that money has been spent on gear, bills, clothes, food, etc. Would it really be worth a slow and painful death? Always remember that and don't lower your standards. The nicest, cleanest, loveliest people can be diseased. And also remember that if he is asking you to go without, who else does he ask? You've seen the state of some of the girls on the beat, the ones that you've said you wouldn't touch with someone else's? Well this isn't with someone else's, if you sleep with him without, you may as well be sleeping with them yourself, as whatever they have you - will get. Sorry to go on but I want you to get the message!
